From a young age, we are taught that exercise is good for us. It elevates the heart rate, prompts weight loss and prevents muscle atrophy.

However, the benefits of exercise go far beyond this. In fact, there are a number of ways that exercise can increase your chances of success.

1. Active Body = Active Mind

As with all good clichés, it is true. From a biological point of view, exercise leads to increased circulation, which in turn means an increase in the amount of oxygen transported to the brain. However, exercise has great psychological benefits, too. If you consistently push your body to its limits, both body and mind become accustomed to dealing with stressful situations. In other words, an ability to overcome physical obstacles, enhances mental and physical strength.

2. Survival of the Fittest

In modern society, survival of the fittest is often replaced with survival of the richest, most intelligent or most charismatic. However, the advantages of being physically fit in a tough world have not vanished. All men and women should feel confident in their physical ability to protect themselves from harm. For example, protecting yourself or a loved one from a mugger, defending your home against a burglar or ensuring that you can escape a life-threatening situation, such as a fire.

3. Save Money

This may seem like a counter-intuitive benefit. After all, gym membership and exercise equipment are expensive. However, have you ever stopped to think how much money you could be saving by increasing your fitness and health? Being overweight increases your chances of developing heart disease, diabetes and a range of other illnesses. The cost of treatment for such conditions can be huge. Of course, this is not to mention the emotional cost to yourself and your family and the social cost of days spent absent from work and the strain on medical resources. Therefore, before dismissing gym membership because of the expense, consider the alternative.

4. Increase Mental Well-being

It is no secret that looking good makes you feel good. If you are physically fit and healthy you will feel more confident and have a more positive approach to all aspects of your life. In addition, exercise is known to make us happy. Physical activity floods the brain with endorphins (the happy hormone), which, in some cases, can alleviate depression without the use of drugs.

5. Increase Your Chances of Success

Unfortunately, we live in a fairly shallow world, which prizes aesthetic appeal highly. The fact is that attractive people are better paid, get promoted above their less attractive colleagues and will ultimately earn more. One way to improve your appeal is to ensure that you are physically fit. In addition, being fit and healthy will ensure that you have more energy and are, therefore, more productive, which lead to promotion opportunities and increased salary.

In short, exercising regularly can make you healthy, wealthy and wise. So, what’s stopping you?
